But there’s also good reason for Microsoft to be consistent in its product messaging and marketing. This is scarcely an impassioned defense of computing on a nearly twenty year-old CPU. It goes without saying that there are 10,000 reasons to upgrade from an ancient Pentium III or original Athlon system to something that can run SSE2, an SIMD instruction set that’s nearly old enough to drink. It recently announced it would no longer provide support to various forums devoted to, among other MS products, Windows 7 and 8.1. Over the last few years, Microsoft has declared that later-model Intel and AMD CPUs would not be supported in any OS except for Windows 10. And it’s just the latest example of how the company has been trying to shed its obligation to support its own operating systems every single way it can. There’s no dividing line that states that some Windows 7 customers will continue to receive support while others won’t. And more to the point, there’s no asterisk in Microsoft’s life cycle guidance. You’d get better results out of a modern phone.īut as Computerworld notes, there are still people running Windows 7 on old P3 systems, even if there aren’t very many. A dual-socket Tualatin server system that allowed for overclocking (if any such motherboard or workaround ever existed) would still be stuck at a fraction of modern CPU performance. The fastest P3 ever built - the Tualatin core - topped out at 1.4GHz. On the one hand, there are very, very few people still banging around the internet on a Pentium III class processor. There are two ways to look at this situation. We regret the error.“Upgrade your machines with a processor that supports SSE2 or virtualize those machines.” A Matter of Principle The two phones share a home button, but not the same overall design. If you do have an iPhone eligible for the upgrade, you can look for iOS 16 to arrive this fall.Ĭorrection June 6th, 6:00PM ET: A previous version of this article stated that the 2022 iPhone SE used the same design as the 2016 iPhone SE. ![]() ![]() And if Apple’s current track record is anything to go by, the 2022 SE will probably see software updates into the latter half of this decade, too. If you’re a 6S or SE owner who’s fond of that form factor, you don’t have to give it up quite yet. The first-gen iPhone SE was recently succeeded by a 2022 model that keeps the long-lost home button featured by the 2016 edition. Their midrange and flagship devices now get up to five years of security updates. It’s also much longer than Android devices have historically had access to software updates, though Samsung and Google have recently made significant strides in that department. The iPhone 7 and SE were released in 2016, while the 6S was released in 2015, meaning they received nearly six and seven years of software support, respectively. To download iOS 16, you’ll need an iPhone 8 or later, meaning Apple is more or less ending support for the iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, and original iPhone SE. Apple released details about iOS 16 today at its Worldwide Developers Conference, including which phones will be eligible for the update - and which didn’t make the cut.
